Curriculum

Yarralea provides 3 and 4 year old sessional and long day kindergarten, bush kindergarten and a multi-age kindergarten program for children from 1 year of age.  All programs are led by degree qualified kindergarten teachers.  Families have the flexibility to choose a combination of kindergarten programs to extend children's day from 8:00am till 6:00pm.

Funded 4 year old kinder - 15 hours per week (including bush kinder one day per week)

3 year old Kinder - 6.5 hours per week (one morning and one afternoon- bush kinder on Thursday mornings from Spring 2019)

Long day kinder for 3 and 4 year olds, Monday - Friday 8am-6pm incorporating their kinder sessions.

Multi-age Kindergarten Program - 1-6 years.
Children under 3 can only attend 9am - 12:00pm or 1:00pm - 4:00pm.  From 3 years of age children can attend full days 8am-6pm.

Yarralea Children's Centre's program is underpinned by the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF), the National Quality Standards (NQS) and our Philosophy.  We believe that learning in an indoor/outdoor play-based program enhances children's sense of identity, connectedness, well-being, confidence, thinking and communication. Yarralea's programs are child-centred and emergent. Children's ideas and stories steer the curriculum and construct a learning environment that is meaningful to each individual child.

Bush Kinder

Children in the 4 year old program attend Bush kinder once morning a week in the Darebin Parklands which is extended to 4pm from August.  This enables the children to spend regular, long periods of unstructured time in a natural environment.  Children in the 3 year year old Friday program attend bush Kinder 8.30-12pm from Spring.

There is mounting evidence of decreasing opportunities for children to play outdoors in nature and this links to concerns about children's health and wellbeing. There are well documented diverse benefits of nature play including increased confidence, motivation, imagination and concentration; increased social, physical and language skills; deeper conceptual understandings; an authentic connection and respect for the natural environment and sustainability; and enhanced family and community attitudes towards natural play spaces and risk management.

Yarralea Children's Centre has a history of providing a comprehensive and high quality service, with higher levels of staff/child ratios than those experienced in many other centres in the area.  As a community run, not-for-profit centre, Yarralea depends on fees to make all programs viable. Children attending the 4 year old kindergarten program receive a per capita grant which is paid to the centre to reduce their fees. Yarralea is an approved child care provider and all fees can attract Child Care Rebate and Benefit for eligible families. Please visit the Australian Government - Human Services website for current information about the Child Care Rebate and Child Care Benefit, to ascertain your eligibility.

Yarralea provides a sessional kindergarten stream and a long day kindergarten steam.  Children in each stream attend together but are charged according to the stream in which they are booked into,

Kindergarten enrolment

Yarralea is part of the City of Yarra Central Registration System for 3 and 4 year old kindergarten places and children can be registered from birth.  To enrol in kinder please click City of Yarra to download a form.  Once offered a kindergarten place families have the option to add Long Day Kindergarten hours if they wish.

All children are eligible to attend kindergarten at Yarralea Children's Centre, whether they live in the City of Yarra, the City of Darebin or beyond. Our enrolments are prioritised for places by the Commonwealth Priority of Access guidelines and Yarra Council's Priority of Access Policy. Read more about this service on the City of Yarra's website.

Multi-age kindergarten enrolment

Enrolments for the multi-age kindergarten are taken directly through the Centre. Please complete an application form below and return to the centre.  The Multi-age Program is for children from 1 year of age and is a great first experience of being cared for outside the home.  Please note that children under 3 can only attend 9:00am - 12:00pm or 1:00pm - 4:00pm. This follows on from our history of providing occasional care which is designed to provide an opportunity for children to socialise with peers while giving parents a break.
